Audrey Hepburn inspiration

This week, seeing a shot of Audrey Hepburn by Bob Willoughby on Wayne Ford’s blog, reminded me of Sam’s images inspired by vintage car interiors and a model who looked a little like Hepburn.

Far from a studio lot in Hollywood, these images, some of which appeared in Cowboy Kate (as one of the ‘other stories’ – ‘Sunday’), were shot in a field on the outskirts of Johannesburg. The car was a 1936 Bentley which Sam not only restored and rallied in Africa but also used as everyday transport.

The final image in this series was a set in Sam’s 60’s studio in a light industrial building in downtown Johannesburg. One of the car interior shots features as a print on the wall.

The images in this post were scanned from vintage silver prints. Sam’s archive is yielding fascinating discoveries which have remained hidden for decades, including experimental work that has never been exhibited or published. Future posts will feature this work as it is catalogued.
